According to APA 7th Edition for Student Papers:

Page Numbers

  • The page header consists only of the page number
  • The page number is inserted on the top right corner and is on all pages.
  • Start the title page with page number 1

Running Head
The running head is a short version of your paper’s title (or the full title if the title is already short).
For APA 7th Edition, it is not required for student papers unless your instructor requests it. If your instructor does ask that you create a running head, follow these instructions:

  • Align the running head to the left margin of the page header, across from the right-aligned page number.
  • Type the running head in all capital letters.
  • Do not use the label “Running head:” before the running head.
  • Ensure the running head is no more than 50 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
  • Avoid using abbreviations in the running head; however, the ampersand symbol (&) may be used rather than “and” if desired.
  • The running head appears in the same format on every page, including the first page.

The APA Style Library Guide has a paper template to download and sample papers for further help.  If your instructor requires you to use a running head, use this APA 6th: Template with a running head for your paper.
